At first I did not want to modify the airbox of my Hayabusa. I did not think I needed any more hp from this bike. However, after reading several postings to www.hayabusa.org, and seeing the results that Lee Shierts obtained from the August 1999 issue of RoadRacing World, I just could not
hold myself back. The rest of this page deals with my impulse and the need for speed that I appear to be addicted to since purchasing my Busa.
So, I lifted my gas tank and removed the airbox. I got out my trusty Dremel tool and
started cutting. At first, I thought that I could do this job in about five minutes. However, I had no clue just how thick this plastic really was!
My five-minute job lasted 45 minutes and I ended up burning out one of my Dremel tools! Oh well, what we won't do for a bit more power!
From the picture on the right you can see the infamous "flapper valve" sitting there
ready to rob hp from any and all unsuspecting riders. Not knowing just how much plastic to remove, I cut away only up to the the inside
diameter (lip) of the airfilter. I spent a few extra minutes attempting to smooth this area out but I don't think I did a very good job of it. Now my airbox looks like the picture on
the left, the flapper gone, extra air for the beast to breathe. People refer to this as a "small box mod."
I have since removed the entire "floor" of my airbox and stock air filter. I replaced the
filter with Uni-Flo sheet foam. People refer to this as a "large box mod."
